Orangutans are the most intelligent great apes and our close relatives. But because of the ongoing rainforest destruction, they are however on the brink of extinction.
We are active in Orang Utan and local area conservation matters- Bob our director was recently in Sumatra working with a schoolgroup studying rainforest and habitat conservation.

The name orangutan is of malayan origin and means "man of the forest". They live only in Southeast Asia on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra and are devided into two species: the Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii). Both species are on the Red List of endangered species, a classification made by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature IUCN.
While the Bornean Orangutan is endangered of extinction with an estimated population of 54'000 individuals left.
Orangutans are considered to be the most intelligent great apes and share 96,7% of our own DNA. They recognize themselves in the mirror, learn from and teach each other and they have been shown to take another individuals perspective. Scientists even taught them communication skills such as human sign language or the use of computer touch screens. In zoos, orangutans are known - and feared - as the quickest tool users and escape artists.
