Sandakan Death March
This trek remembers the events of the Second World War and the occupation of Sabah
The six-day tour follows the Sandakan-Ranau Death March Route from beginning to end, incorporating the Nabutan-Ranau Walk, and visiting all major POW sites and memorials.
Tours depart from Kota Kinabalu throughout the year, according to demand.
Please note that the duration of each day's walk is subject to weather and track conditions and the physical fitness of participants.
Day 1: (D)
Morning flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan. After checking into Hotel Sandakan, afternoon departure for Town Tour, including historic St Michael's Church and the magnificent stained glass Windows of Remembrance. Dinner at the charming English Tea House.
Day 2: (FB/L/D)
After breakfast, a visit to Sandakan Memorial Park, the site of the Sandakan POW Camp, followed by lunch at Sepilok, prior to visiting to the famous Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Dinner at local restaurant.
Day 3: (FB/D)
After Breakfast, depart by coach for Nelapak, with stops at key death march sites, en route. Lunch at Telupid. From Telupid, proceed to Paginatan, a major POW staging camp, and then to Sabah Tea Estate, for overnight stay in traditional-style longhouse, and dinner.
Day 4: (FB/D)
After breakfast, drive to Nabutan to walk part of the death march route along a jungle track to Nelapak. Return to Sabah Tea Estate for lunch and to inspect tea factory before leaving for Poring Hot Springs for a swim, relaxation or possibly a jungle canopy walk, before returning to Tea Estate for overnight stay and dinner. 2 hours' duration, easy to moderate grade.
Day 5: (FB/L/D)
After breakfast, leisurely walk to Muruk village, then drive to Marakau Hill, with spectacular views of Mt Kinabalu, for jungle trek to Ranau Plain. Packed lunch. Transfer by vehicle to visit Ranau POW Camp site. Overnight and dinner at Perkasa Hotel, at Kundasang (Mt. Kinabalu). 3-4 hours' duration, easy to moderate grade, with some uphill sections.
Day 6: (FB)
After breakfast visit the magnificently restored Kundasang War Memorial, then Kinabalu National Park. After lunch, return to Kota Kinabalu by vehicle.
