Tanjung Puting National Park
The Boat Ride To Enter Tanjung Puting National Park is An Adventures Itself
From the starting point at Kumai boat stage where we will be board on the boat called "Klotok", the traditional wooden boat 12m long and 2.5m wide, take you to slow moving boat ride up the tributaries of the Sekoyer river getting closer to the home of Orangutan. As the river narrows, you cruise past nipah palm mangrove and it is not unusual to spot salt water crocodile. The indiginous Proboscis Monkey ( Nasalis lavartus) settle for the night by the riverbanks and are easily see at dusk.
When night falls the boat crew light candles and serve dinner on the upper deck. Here under the stars you can hear the unique rainforest orchestra. The rainforest never sleeps.
Morning can be chilly until the sun is up. Today we visit orangutan at both camp Pondok Tanggui and Camp Leakey during the morning and afternoon feeding time. Quietly we waiti for the orangutan to the ranger calling their name "Yoooo Kosasi Yoooo". Female orangutan and her juvenile also her infant on her shoulder moving slowly from the tree to tree reach the free banana which are placed on feeding platform. You soon find yourself surrounded by great red apes.
Generally, the trip takes only 3 days from your starting point Jakarta or Bali, but you might take another 1 or 2 days more to further enjoy this special, and hugely endangered, environment. For any natural lover this place is pretty unique.
